About Cryptogram on Suvi
A cryptogram is a quote written in a simple code: every letter has been swapped for another, the same swap all the way through, and no letter stands for itself. Work out which letter is which and the words appear. Each day brings a new quote, the same for everyone, from writers whose work now belongs to us all: Jane Austen, Mark Twain, Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, the Brontës and many more, each one checked word for word against its source. Tap a letter in the quote, then the letter you think it stands for, and it fills in everywhere. Letter counts show which code letters turn up most, Check marks anything that isn't right yet with no penalty at all, and a hint fills in a letter when you're stuck. When it's solved you see the whole quote, who said it and where.
How to play
- Tap a letter in the quote. Every place that code letter appears lights up.
- Tap the letter you think it really is on the keyboard. It fills in everywhere that code letter appears, and the next blank is chosen for you.
- Short words are a good way in: a one-letter word is A or I, and a three-letter word is often THE or AND.
- Check marks any letter that isn't right yet, with no penalty. A hint fills in the commonest letter you haven't got. Solve the quote to finish the day.
Controls
On a phone or tablet: Tap a letter in the quote, then a letter on the keyboard. Check, Hint and Letter counts sit above the keyboard.
On a desktop: Click a letter in the quote and type. Arrow keys move along the quote, Backspace clears a letter, Enter checks.
Tips
- Start with the one-letter words and the words with an apostrophe: 'S, 'T and 'LL narrow things down fast.
- Open Letter counts: the code letter that turns up most often is usually E, T or A.
- Look for double letters in the middle of a word: LL, EE, SS and OO are the common ones.
- No letter stands for itself, so if the code shows Q, the answer isn't Q.
- If a letter turns amber, you've used it twice. Each real letter has just one code letter.
Questions
- Is the cryptogram the same for everyone?
- Yes. There is one quote a day, the same for every player and in the same code, and it changes at midnight in your time zone.
- Where do the quotes come from?
- From writers whose work is now free for everyone to use: authors who died long ago, and quotes published before 1929. Each one was checked word for word against its source, and we show who said it and where once you've solved it.
- What happens if I get a letter wrong?
- Nothing bad. Check marks the letters that aren't right yet with a dotted line, and you can change any letter at any time. There's no score to lose.
- How do hints work?
- A hint fills in the commonest code letter you haven't got right yet, everywhere it appears. Your first hint each day is free, and while Suvi is new more are on us, with no ad to watch. Each day also starts with one letter given.
- What do the letter counts show?
- How many times each code letter appears in today's quote. In English the commonest letters are E, T, A, O, I and N, so the code letters that turn up most often are a good place to start.
- Is it free?
- Yes. The Cryptogram is free with no account and no download, and it runs in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer.
