Word unscrambler

Type the letters you have and see every real word they spell, longest first, with the everyday words at the top of each list. Add a length or a pattern when you know part of the word.

How to use it

  1. Type your letters in the top box, up to 15 of them, in any order. Type a question mark for a blank tile: it can stand for any letter.
  2. Press Find words. Every word those letters make appears, grouped by length with the longest first. You don't have to use every letter, and a letter is only used as many times as you typed it.
  3. Narrow it down if you know more. Pick a length, or type a pattern with an underscore for each gap: _a__e finds five-letter words with an a in second place and an e at the end. Letters in the pattern count as yours even if you didn't type them, as if they were already on the board. A pattern on its own, with no letters, finds every word that fits it.
  4. Change anything and the list updates as you type.

Which words it knows

Over 74,000 English words of 3 to 7 letters, from the same lists our word games use to check a guess. The everyday ones, the words most people use, are in bold and come first, so the answer you're after is usually near the top. Names, places and abbreviations aren't in the list, and nor are rude words or slurs: anything our games would never show is left out here too.

Where British and American spelling differ, both are real words here. Each one is marked UK or US, with the other spelling beside it, so you can pick the one your puzzle wants.

Questions

Is the word unscrambler free?
Yes. It's free, with no sign-up and no download, on a phone, tablet or computer.
Do I have to use all my letters?
No. It finds every word you can make from some or all of them, from 3 letters up to 7, each letter used no more times than you typed it.
How do I use a blank tile?
Type a question mark (?) for each blank, up to three. A blank can stand for any letter.
What does a pattern like _a__e mean?
Each underscore is a gap and each letter is fixed in its place, so _a__e means a five-letter word with a second and e last. You can use a pattern with your letters, or on its own.
Why are some words marked UK or US?
They are spelled differently in British and American English. Both spellings are real words, so both are shown, each marked with the other spelling beside it.
Why isn't a word I know in the list?
The list covers words of 3 to 7 letters and leaves out names, places, abbreviations and anything rude. If an everyday word is missing, tell us and we'll look.
Does it send my letters anywhere?
No. The word lists are fetched once and the search runs on your device; your letters never leave it.
