Puzzles for the Christmas holidays
The quiet stretch between the presents and the evening is made for a pencil and a puzzle. Print a pack for each person, or one between two, and do the word search together while the oven does the work. Read the crossword clues out loud and the whole room can join in, even the people who say they never do crosswords.
A printed pack also slips into a card for someone who likes pencil puzzles and doesn't go online. For family who live far away, everyone can play the same word search on the day, each on their own device, or play each other at chess or Four in a Row by invite link.
For a care home or activity group
Print as many copies as your group needs: the pack is free to copy for a care home, a library, a day center, a school or a club. The large-print word search has 10 words in big letters on a 10 by 10 grid, and the large-print crossword puts the grid on one page and the clues on the next. The answers are on the last page, so a helper can check without spoiling it for the room.
For a group session, put one large-print crossword on a table and read the clues aloud: they are short, plain definitions, with no crossword tricks to learn. On a tablet, the large-print word search and the large-print crossword are free every day too.
About these puzzles
We chose every word and wrote every clue ourselves, and checked them by hand. There are no brand names or characters, and no words that are spelled differently in the US and the UK, so the same puzzle is fair on both sides of the Atlantic. The pack's crossword is its own puzzle, not the one for Christmas week on the site, so doing one never spoils the other.
