Free alternatives to NYT Games

The New York Times' games are some of the most popular daily puzzles there are, and several are still free. The Crossword, the Midi, the Mini, Letter Boxed and Tiles need a subscription, though. Here is the closest free game to each one: ours where we make something close, someone else's where we don't, and a plain 'nothing close' where that's the truth. Facts checked November 2026.

Above: today's Mini Crossword. Our own five by five crossword, free every day: the nearest thing on Suvi to the Mini, which now needs a subscription.

The Crossword and the Midi

Daily Crossword On Suvi

A full crossword every day at three levels: Easy is 11 by 11, close to the Midi's size, Medium is 13 by 13 and Hard 15 by 15. Straight clues, never cryptic, on a phone or a computer, and a free printable of each day's grid.

How it differs: our clues are plainer than The Crossword's hardest days, and Suvi is new, so there are only a few past puzzles so far.

The Mini

Mini Crossword On Suvi

A five by five crossword every day with everyday words and fair clues. Check marks a wrong square, Reveal shows a letter, and a clean solve earns the gold tick.

How it differs: the same small daily format with our own clues, written to be fair rather than tricky.

Wordle

Word Guess On Suvi

Find the five-letter word in six tries. Every letter you type is marked as in the right place, in the word somewhere else, or not in it, and the marks never rely on color alone. One word a day for everyone, then practice words.

How it differs: hardly at all, it's the same idea. Wordle itself is still free, so play whichever you like better.

Spelling Bee

Word Scramble On Suvi

Five scrambled words a day, from four letters up to seven. Any real word that uses every letter counts.

How it differs: it's an anagram puzzle, not a hunt for words round a center letter, so it's the nearest we make rather than the same game.

Blossom · Merriam-Webster

Seven letters in a flower, one in the middle that every word must use. You get twelve words to score as many points as you can, with a bonus petal and a bonus for a word that uses all seven.

Strands

Word Search On Suvi

A themed word search every day: fourteen words from one theme in a 12 by 12 grid, with a timer and a hint that shows where a word starts.

How it differs: words run in straight lines and the theme is given, so there's no hidden theme word to find and no words that bend round corners.

Connections

PuzzGrid · grids made by its players

Nothing on Suvi is like Connections. PuzzGrid has thousands of sixteen-clue grids made by players: sort the clues into four groups of four against the clock. Free, with ads unless you support it on Patreon.

Sudoku

Sudoku On Suvi

A new puzzle at four levels every day, easy to expert, all free. Each has exactly one solution and is graded by the techniques it needs, with pencil marks, undo and a free printable every day.

Killer Sudoku On Suvi

Sudoku with sums: dashed cages that add up, at three levels every day, with a Combos list of every set of numbers that fits a cage.

A step on from sudoku, for when the plain grid starts to feel easy.

Tiles

Mahjong On Suvi

Match free pairs of identical tiles to clear the layout. A new layout every day, always solvable, with hints, a shuffle and undo.

How it differs: Tiles has you match shared patterns in a chain; mahjong solitaire matches identical tiles. It's the nearest tile-matching game we make, not the same one.

Crossplay

Words With Friends · Zynga

Nothing on Suvi is like Crossplay. Words With Friends is the long-running free word-tile game to play against friends or on your own, in an app, with ads unless you pay to remove them.

Where we have nothing close

Letter Boxed, Pips, Connections and Crossplay: nothing on Suvi plays like them, and we'd rather say so than point you at something that doesn't. For Connections and Crossplay we've named free games by other makers above. For Letter Boxed and Pips we haven't found a free one we're happy to recommend; if it's number logic you're after, Killer Sudoku is our nearest.

Rather do them on paper?

Every day's crossword, Mini, sudoku, killer sudoku and word search is also a free printable PDF, with a large-print edition and the answers at the back. More daily word games: games like Wordle.
